Your kitchen drain handles a lot every day, from washing dishes and rinsing vegetables to cleaning pots and pans. But just because something can go down the drain doesn’t mean it should. Many common household items can stick to the inside of your pipes, create blockages, cause unpleasant odours or contribute to recurring drain clogs. Over time, small amounts of food waste and grease can build up and restrict water flow. Knowing what not to put down your kitchen drain is one of the easiest ways to protect your plumbing and avoid an unnecessary drain emergency. Here are some of the biggest kitchen drain offenders and what to do instead.
Gurgling Drains1. Grease, Fat and Cooking Oil
One of the biggest causes of kitchen drain problems is grease in drains. It may be liquid when you pour it into the sink, but grease, cooking oil and fats can cool and stick to the inside of your pipes. As more debris attaches to the buildup, the opening inside the pipe can become increasingly restricted.
Eventually, you may notice:

  • Slow kitchen drains

  • Gurgling sounds

  • Standing water

  • Recurring blockages

  • Unpleasant drain odours

What should you do instead?Let cooking grease cool and solidify, then dispose of it in the garbage according to local waste guidelines. Larger amounts of cooking oil should be collected in a container rather than poured down the sink. Never rely on hot water to “wash grease away.” It may move grease farther down the plumbing, where it can eventually cool and stick to the pipe.
Kitchen Drain2. Coffee Grounds
Coffee grounds may seem harmless because they’re small, but they can accumulate inside your plumbing and contribute to a blockage. They don’t dissolve in water. Instead, they can collect with grease and other debris already inside the drain.
Better option:
Put used coffee grounds in your compost or garbage rather than washing them down the kitchen sink.
3. Eggshells
Eggshells are another common kitchen drain myth.Small pieces can collect inside plumbing, particularly when combined with other food particles and grease. They aren’t a good substitute for proper drain cleaning. If you have a garbage disposal, don’t assume eggshells are beneficial for sharpening or cleaning the unit either. The safest approach is simple: put eggshells in the compost or garbage.
4. Flour and Dough
Flour mixed with water becomes sticky and can form a paste. Dough can also expand and become difficult to move through plumbing. Washing large amounts of flour, batter or dough down the kitchen drain can contribute to a stubborn blockage.Scrape excess flour and dough into the garbage before washing bowls and utensils.
5. Rice and PastaRice and pasta
can continue absorbing water after they’re cooked.- that means the small amount left on your plate can become significantly larger once it enters your plumbing. Large quantities can collect with other food waste and contribute to a blockage. Instead, scrape leftover rice and pasta into the garbage or compost before washing dishes.
6. Fibrous Food Waste
Certain vegetables contain tough fibres that don’t break down easily.
Examples include:

  • Celery

  • Corn husks

  • Onion skins

  • Asparagus

  • Artichoke leaves

These fibres can wrap around components in a garbage disposal or collect inside plumbing. Even if you have a garbage disposal, it’s better to dispose of particularly fibrous food waste separately.
7. Bones and Hard Food Scraps
Bones, fruit pits, shells and other hard food waste shouldn’t be treated as drain-friendly. They can damage garbage disposal components or become lodged in plumbing. A garbage disposal isn’t designed to make every type of food waste disappear. When in doubt, scrape it into the garbage or compost instead.

Your kitchen sink shouldn’t be used to dispose of leftover paint, solvents, harsh chemicals or other household products. These materials can be harmful to your plumbing and the environment. Follow your municipality’s disposal guidelines for household hazardous waste rather than pouring these products down your drain.
9. “Flushable” or Cleaning Wipes
Although wipes are generally associated with toilets, they sometimes end up in household drains during cleaning. Even products labelled “flushable” don’t belong in your kitchen plumbing. They don’t break down like toilet paper and can contribute to blockages. Keep wipes and cleaning materials out of your drains altogether.
What About a Garbage Disposal? A garbage disposal can make kitchen cleanup easier, but it doesn’t mean everything belongs down the drain. Think of it as a tool for handling small amounts of appropriate food scraps, not as a replacement for your garbage or compost bin. Even food that can technically go through a disposal can contribute to buildup when it’s used excessively or combined with grease. Running cold water while using the disposal and allowing the unit to clear afterward can help move appropriate food particles through the system. Regular maintenance is also important.
frustrating kitchenHow to Prevent Kitchen Drain Clogs Good kitchen drain care doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple habits can make a noticeable difference: Use a Sink Strainer A sink strainer catches food particles before they enter your plumbing. Empty it regularly instead of washing the contents down the drain.
Scrape Plates First
Before putting dishes in the sink, scrape leftover food into the garbage or compost.
Keep Grease Out This is one of the most important habits for preventing kitchen drain problems. Never intentionally pour grease, fat or cooking oil down your sink.
Clean Your Drain Regularly
Routine cleaning can help prevent buildup from becoming a larger problem. However, avoid relying on harsh chemical drain cleaners as a regular maintenance solution. If your drain repeatedly slows down, the issue may require professional attention rather than another bottle of drain cleaner.
What If Your Kitchen Drain Is Already Slow?
A slow drain is often an early warning sign. If water is draining more slowly than usual, don’t wait until the sink stops draining completely. A partially restricted pipe can continue collecting grease, food waste and other debris until the blockage becomes severe. Professional drain cleaning can help identify and remove buildup before it turns into a major backup. If your kitchen drain keeps becoming clogged despite regular maintenance, there may be a deeper issue inside the plumbing system. Recurring blockages can sometimes indicate significant buildup farther down the line or another plumbing problem that needs to be investigated.
When Should You Call a Plumber?
Consider professional help if you notice:

  • A kitchen drain that repeatedly clogs

  • Water backing up into the sink

  • Multiple slow drains

  • Persistent sewer or drain odours

  • Gurgling sounds from the plumbing

  • A blockage that returns shortly after being cleared

  • Water backing up when another fixture is running

Repeatedly treating the same clog without finding the cause can become frustrating and expensive. A professional plumber can assess the plumbing and determine whether you need drain blockage removal, deeper drain cleaning or further investigation.
Protect Your Kitchen Plumbing
Most kitchen drain problems don’t start with one dramatic event. They develop gradually as grease, food waste and other debris accumulate inside the plumbing. The good news is that prevention is relatively simple. Don’t put grease, oil, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, fibrous food waste, bones or other unsuitable materials down your kitchen drain. Use your garbage, compost and appropriate waste disposal services instead. And if your drain is already slow or repeatedly clogging, don’t keep pushing the problem down the line. Getting the plumbing assessed can help identify the cause before a slow drain becomes a full backup.
