A small water leak behind your wall might not seem like a big deal until it turns into a major repair job. Left unnoticed, hidden leaks can cause serious structural damage, encourage toxic mould growth and lead to expensive water bills. The key is catching it early.

What You will Need

Before you get started, gather these basic tools and materials to help with detection:

📌Flashlight
📌Moisture meter (or infrared thermometer)
📌Screwdriver
📌Utility knife
📌Small pry bar
📌Towels or rags
📌Painters’ tape (for marking suspected areas)

Optional: Thermal imaging camera or leak detection device

Step 1: Look for Visual Red Flags

Start by inspecting your walls, floors, and ceilings especially near bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry areas.
Common signs include:
Peeling or bubbling paint, Yellow or brown stains Damp or sagging drywall, Warped baseboards or flooringVisible mould or mildew, Mark any suspicious areas with tape.

Step 2: Use a Moisture Meter

Use a handheld moisture meter to test the suspect spots. Place the meter against the wall and note any areas that show unusually high readings compared to others.
TGPC Pro Tip: Moisture meters are more accurate on drywall and wood than tile or brick. If you don’t have one, a thermal camera can also detect cooler “wet” areas behind surfaces.

Step 3: Smell for Mustiness

Even if you don’t see water damage, your nose might pick up what your eyes don’t. A persistent musty smell in one area of the home often indicates hidden moisture.

Step 4: Shut Off Fixtures and Check the Meter

To confirm whether the leak is coming from your plumbing system (versus rain or exterior damage), turn off all water-using appliances and check your water meter.

Here’s how:

1. Note your water meter reading.
2. Wait 30–60 minutes with no water running.
3. If the number increases, you have a leak likely inside your plumbing system.

Step 5: Isolate the Wall

If signs point to a leak inside the wall, use a screwdriver and utility knife to carefully remove a small section of drywall. Do this only if damage is visible or moisture readings are high.

⚠️ Caution: Watch for electrical wires. Shut off power to that area of the house before cutting into the wall.

Look inside for:

Wet insulation
Dripping or sweating pipes
Signs of corrosion or green staining on copper
Black mould or mildew spots

Take a photo and record what you see.

Step 6: Call in a Licensed Plumber

While small leaks might seem DIY-fixable, most wall leaks require the experience and equipment of a licensed plumber. At TGPC, we use leak detection tools like pressure tests, scopes and thermal imaging to pinpoint the issue without unnecessary wall damage.Bathroom fixture plumbing upgrade

When to Suspect a Leak (Even Without Visible Signs)

Some leaks are hidden so well, homeowners only notice once secondary issues start to show. Watch out for a sudden increase in your water bill, sounds of water dripping or running behind walls, warm or cold spots on drywall Unexplained respiratory issues from indoor mould.

Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you spot any of these signs, don’t wait:

⚠️ Mould Growth; Indicates long-term moisture. Can impact indoor air quality and health.
⚠️ Electrical Outlets or Switches Near Moisture; Risk of electrical shock or fire.
⚠️ Buckling Flooring or Sagging Ceilings; Could indicate significant structural damage.
